Aramaic

I am a very proud to be an Assyrian.  Not many people know what that is or where we come from.  Assyrians are the indigenous people of Iraq.  Assyrians were one of the first civilizations to exist and our old language is Aramaic. We have been around for a very long time, and our population is slowly dwindling.  Growing up if we saw a little excerpt about us in the history books we would run home and show our parents and how excited we were to find it. A couple of weeks ago I was watching one of my favorite television shows called The Vampire Diaries.  They mentioned Aramaic, our language, and I got so excited.

Then they continue to go on and say that it is a dead language.  My excitement level dropped and it made me kind of angry.  It makes me angry because we do exist and our language is still used today. In our churches and in our homes, the language is part of our everyday lives.  It makes me sad to know that people don't know of our existence.  We make it our job to spread the word about our people but there is only so much we can do. It just makes you wish that we were mentioned in our history books, that the news showed how our people are being killed every day, and that people know that we still do exist.

An American Crime

I was sitting at home, bored on a weekday trying to find a movie to watch on Netflix. My friend told me to watch the movie An American Crime

He said it is the best movie he has watched in a while and that it is based on a true story.  I've always enjoyed movies based on true stories, so I decided to watch it.  This movie was one of the saddest movies I have ever watched.  The story is about a girl named Silvia Likens who is left in the care of a housewife, who already has many children.  The mother ends up imprisoning Silvia in her basement and abusing her and allowing the other children and their friends to abuse her.  This takes place in the 1960's and it is so sad to see that a woman is capable of that kind of abuse and torture when she already had children of her own. Here is the link that explains the true story of Silvia Likens.  The movie is a great representation of what actually happened to her and I recommend the movie even though it is kind of depressing.

Assigned Entry #3

My first reaction to this video was can't people walk?  Seeing everyone sitting in their chairs having people getting them drinks, or being able to do so many different things all in the seat of their chair.  My other reaction was why is everyone overweight.  Even babies are left alone having a computer teach them their abc's.  This video kind of represents how our society is now.  Everything is done electronically.  Instead of people going outside and doing things outdoors, people are so busy with their phones or video games. One scene from the clip that stood out to me was the clip with the man that falls out of his chair.  It's sad to see that the man couldn't even help himself to get out of the chair. It seems a little extreme but its an extreme representation of how our society is today.

Another scene that stood out to me was where someone was dialing with their feet.  Its scary to see that someday our society might be like.  Where people don't communicate, and everything is done electronically.
